Chinas Oaxaqueñas
A welcome carried through the streets: flower baskets, music, and full skirts bring the joyful spirit of Oaxaca’s calendas to the stage.
What to look and listen for
Look for the balance of the baskets and the movement of the skirts. The white blouse and colorful skirt belong to the version photographed at our 2026 festival.

Putla Villa de Guerrero · Sierra Sur
Comparsa de los Viejos · Tiliches
The Viejos are part of Putla’s living Carnival tradition, sustained by neighborhoods, comparsas, and families. Their playful energy invites everyone into the celebration.
What to look and listen for
Strips of colorful fabric cover the clothing and move with the dancers. Masks and hats complete the character; a festival presentation offers a glimpse of the longer community celebration.

Huajuapan de León · Mixteca
Jarabe Mixteco
Jarabe Mixteco and Canción Mixteca are closely tied to Huajuapan de León and its cultural heritage. This music and dance speak of place, memory, and the feeling of belonging to Oaxaca.
What to look and listen for
The floral skirt, ribbon bands, white blouse, and rebozo described in our fashion-show script help tell the clothing story. Watch how the partners respond to one another through steps and turns.

Flor de Piña
Created in 1958 by teacher Paulina Solís, Flor de Piña has become an emblem of Tuxtepec. It brings dancers together in carefully coordinated formations.
What to look and listen for
Pineapples, woven huipiles, and changing lines shape the presentation. The huipiles refer to different communities of northern Oaxaca, each with its own textile tradition.

Heroica Ciudad de Ejutla de Crespo · Valles Centrales
Ejutla de Crespo
Ejutla is known for its Jarabe Ejuteco, lively verses, and unmistakable entrance into the celebration. Our archived program names Ejutla de Crespo as one of the Mini Guelaguetza selections.
What to look and listen for
Listen for the relationship between the music, spoken verses, and dancers’ responses. Clothing and movement belong to the particular version presented by each group.
